Editorial Review: Amazon.com: Two of John Rutter's most popular large-scale choral works are paired in this bargain-priced CD. Requiem, his first composition written without being commissioned, is a convincing affirmation of Christian doctrine on death and eternal life. It is also a substantial and sincere work that strives to be widely appealing while preserving a spiritual context centered on themes of light and consolation. Highlights include "Out of the Deep," its modal tune and harmonies giving it the flavor of a spiritual, and the wonderfully gentle and restful 23rd Psalm. Rutter personalizes his Requiem by adding movements not traditionally part of the Requiem Mass--passages from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, for instance--and this proves to be an effective strategy. Rutter's own, first-class Cambridge Singers are superb, as usual, and soloist Caroline Ashton steals the show with her heavenly Pie Jesu. The Magnificat shows Rutter at his most engaging, thoughtful, and adept. His usual canny sense of tunefulness and rhythmic rightness, flavored with splashes of pop harmony, accomplish his purpose in the Magnificat: to depict Mary's prayer as a celebratory occasion rather than a somber one. --David Vernier Average Rating:
 Rating:  - Rutter's Requiem - more than just a teaching tool.I was introduced to this piece rather recently and wanted to hear it in its entirety - due in no small part to the fact that the soprano solos are quite tricky. The Cambridge Singers, under the baton of Rutter himself, give a very true rendering with meticulous attention to the straight tone sound for which Rutter is so fond. Although this was purchased primarily as a learning tool, Rutter's unusual and often haunting harmonies are a welcome addition to my rather eclectic listening collection. Rating:  - Rutter's MagnificatI have been affiliated with the South Hills Chorale in Pittsburgh, PA, for many, many years. The first time we sang Rutter's Magnificat, a number of years ago, it was unavailable via CD in our local record stores (we wished to use it as a practice vehicle). The Chorale sang it this past Christmas (2009), and I was overjoyed to find it via Amazon, directed by Rutter, and sung by the Cambridge Singers. I first heard this played on public radio and put a lot of effort into tracking down the recording. The music and performance are stunningly beautiful and parts of it move me to tears. The one big problem that detracts is the very inconsistent decibel level throughout that requires frequent adjustments of the volume control. I sing in a local Choral Society and we are performing it this coming weekend. I wanted the CD to follow along at home and get my part down a little better.
