Product Description:
A portrait of black urban America, focusing on three friends growing up in a South Los Angeles neighborhood where friendship, pain, and love are just

Amazon.com essential video:
John Singleton, at the age of 23, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his debut film, Boyz N the Hood. The film stars Laurence Fishburne, Angela Basset, Ice Cube, and Academy Award-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. in his first starring role in a feature film. Gooding plays Tre Styles, a teenager growing up in South Central Los Angeles. His father, Furious (Fishburne), is divorced and living away from Tre and his mother (Basset), but he's still involved in Tre's upbringing, teaching him the values of right and wrong and responsibility. Meanwhile, Tre's childhood buddies Ricky (Morris Chestnut) and Doughboy (Ice Cube) are living their lives in terms of the epidemic of violence and poverty that has plagued their neighborhood. Ricky, a talented football player, strives to get a full athletic scholarship to college. If only his SAT scores were higher. Doughboy lives a life full of crime but still remains true to his friends. The obstacles that these three young men come across result in dire consequences, devastatingly avoidable and inevitable at the same time. Boyz N the Hood is a landmark film beyond its commercial success, presenting a portrait of South Central in the late '80s and early '90s as painted by Singleton (who grew up in that neighborhood), achieving accuracy and dramatic resonance in this story of at-risk youth. --Shannon Gee

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - This movie was o.k.
I really don't like a bunch of black movies because they turn out ghetto;potraying blacks as ghetto. Not this one. It was kind of a joy to watch just like soul food. Not stupid at all. Someone finally got it right.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - TOO MUCH FOUL LANGUAGE
CANT THEY MAKE A BLACK MOVIE WITHOUT ALL THAT f..this, h..that, b..., that's all you here the movie otherwise was pretty good, great message

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Kick Ass Drama
Very good movie about life in South Central La during the 1980's and early 1990's. Good movie about gangbangers and the live they live.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Good movie overshadowed by 4 letter expletives
Great film, i remember seeing this when i was a teenager myself, while some of the movie may be a little far fetched there is quite a lot of plausibility here. Young upstart Cuba Gudding Junior mad a fine performance as did Ice Cube. The only problem with the film is the language is way to overbearing and at times makes the film difficult to watch because of the constant f-bombing in about every other line. The story is great, and the emotions are powerful, as with when i was a child though the girl ... Read More
